Ticket Types to Best Suit Your Travel Needs

One-way Tickets

Available for purchase on board all Shore Line East trains (cash only) with no additional surcharge. One-way tickets are also sold (cash or card) at the following stations: New Haven Union Station, Old Saybrook, and New London. Good for 90 days.

Ten-trip Tickets

Available for purchase at the following stations: New Haven Union Station, Old Saybrook, and New London. Good for 180 days.

Monthly Tickets

Issued per calendar month; available for purchase at the following stations: New Haven Union Station, Old Saybrook, and New London.

  • Monthly - does not include CTtransit New Haven Division bus service.
  • Monthly Plus Bus - Includes CTtransit New Haven Division and New Haven Commuter Connection bus service.
  • School Monthly – discounted fare for students 18 years old or younger traveling to and from primary or secondary school. Proof of age and school-issued ID required. (Not valid for college students.)
  • UniRail Monthly - combines New Haven Line operated by Metro-North with Shore Line East rail service for a lower combined fare than separate tickets. UniRail Monthly Tickets are available at New Haven’s Union Station and any New Haven Line station, as well as by mail at: www.MTA.info. UniRail Tickets cannot be purchased on board Shore Line East trains, or at stations serviced only by Shore Line East.

Monthly tickets are non-transferable; lost tickets can neither refunded nor replaced.

Shore Line East Connecting Passengers

Passengers transferring from a New Haven Line train may purchase combined UniRail tickets from Metro-North ticket machines and ticket windows before boarding. Metro-North fare information is available by clicking here.

Refunds

The redemption value of unused or partially used SLE monthly tickets is determined based on the calendar day of the month that the ticket is postmarked for refund, or presented at the ticket window.

Unused 10-trip tickets are refundable for 180 days at any SLE ticket window or by contacting CTrides at 1-877-287-4337. Used tickets are NOT refundable.

Lost Tickets

UniRail Tickets

UniRail Monthly - combines New Haven Line operated by Metro-North with Shore Line East rail service for a lower combined fare than separate tickets. UniRail Monthly Tickets are available at New Haven’s Union Station and any New Haven Line station, as well as by mail at: www.MTA.info. UniRail Tickets cannot be purchased on board Shore Line East trains, or at stations serviced only by Shore Line East.

Amtrak Cross-Honoring

Amtrak accepts Shore Line East (SLE) Multi-Ride tickets for only the SELECT trains listed on our schedule. Multi-ride tickets include: Shore Line East Monthly, UniRail, Ten-Trip or Weekly tickets but NOT single ride tickets. One-way tickets on Amtrak Cross-Honoring trains will be charged the full One-Way Amtrak fare.

Please be aware that Multi-Ride tickets are non-transferable and only valid for 45 days from purchase date to use on Amtrak trains. Also, Amtrak trains do not make all Shore Line East station stops. Check our schedules or our website Trip Planner to see Amtrak times and stops.

Persons with Disabilities and Medicare Card Recipients

Reduced fares (50% off One-Way Tickets) are available to the following Shore Line East riders with proper ID:

  • Seniors 65 and older
  • Persons with disabilities 12 years and older
  • Medicare card holders

Please note reduced fares are not accepted on board weekday morning Peak trains. This includes Westbound trains 1621-1637 (& 2151) and Eastbound trains 1606-1616 (& 190). Please refer to the PDF schedule for Peak versus Off-Peak travel times. Reduced fare One-Way Tickets are available for purchase on board Shore Line East trains with cash only (with no additional surcharge), as well as at the following stations: New London, Old Saybrook, and New Haven Union Station. The reduced fare applies ONLY to the Shore Line East ticket. Those connecting with the New Haven Line will face a surcharge. 

Personal Care Attendants (PCAs - people employed to assist individuals with disabilities) are eligible to ride the commuter railroads free when accompanying a passenger with a disability. Where required, the PCA must carry identification which shows that he or she is employed by an agency that provides services to people with disabilities.

Proper identification is required to receive the reduced fare. This includes: driver's license, Medicare card, Connecticut Senior/ Disabled Reduced Fare Transit ID Card or MTA Reduced-Fare Metro-Card/People with Disabilities Identification Card. A birth certificate can be used, but only in conjunction with another form of identification.

Children

Up to four children ages 11 and under may travel for free with a Shore Line East fare paying adult weekdays and weekends. Additional children will be charged the adult fare. Shore Line East "Child Fare Policy" does not apply to Amtrak Cross-Honoring options.

If you're continuing your trip on a Metro-North New Haven Line train, for up to four children ages 5-11 traveling with a paying adult, the fare is $1 each. Any additional children ages 5-11 will be charged half the adult fare. Children under 5 years of age travel free.
